Smart Brings Back the Iconic Fortwo as an All-Electric City Car with 300 km Range
The city car icon is making a comeback, but in a completely different form. Geely has confirmed plans to revive the legendary Smart Fortwo as a fully electric vehicle, years after the original model was discontinued in 2024.
The new model is called the smart #2, and it arrives with just two seats and two doors, powered by a rear-mounted electric motor. Official images have surfaced through China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filings, revealing a production design that stays remarkably close to the concept unveiled last April.
The Fortwo Returns with an Electric Heart
The original Smart Fortwo stood out in European city traffic since the late 1990s thanks to its minuscule footprint and two-seat layout. The new version rides on a dedicated electric platform for ultra-compact vehicles, preserving the core idea that made the original a hit.
Numbers tell a compelling story here. The car measures just 2.76 meters in length, 1.67 meters in width. 1.56 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 1.875 meters. These dimensions make it perfect for narrow streets, though they raise valid questions about interior space for occupants.
Technical Specs and a Bigger Battery
Total weight comes in at 1130 kilograms, a reasonable figure for a vehicle of this size with a lithium battery pack. Top speed is capped at 140 km/h, confirming that this is built for urban driving rather than highway cruising.
The rear electric motor produces around 80 horsepower (60 kW), which is modest but adequate for a lightweight city car. The LFP battery uses cells supplied by CATL, while the Geely group assembles the battery pack itself.
European versions will get a 35.7 kWh battery with an expected range of around 300 kilometers per the company's estimates. That represents a significant leap over the previous electric Fortwo, which suffered from extremely limited range.
Competition in this segment will be tough, especially with models like the Citroen Ami and Toyota Aygo X Electric already on the market. Yet Smart is betting on its long heritage in this niche and its strong connection with crowded European cities.
The car is still going through Chinese regulatory approval, but it's expected to reach European showrooms before the end of next year. The final price hasn't been announced yet, though reports suggest Smart will position it competitively against other small EVs.
