Fiat has announced an optional equipment package for its tiny electric vehicle, the Topolino, allowing it to legally operate on public roads in the United States starting fall 2026. The package raises the top speed from 30 km/h to 40 km/h — a critical figure that places it in the low-speed vehicle category.

Safety Additions Included in the Package

The package features a rearview mirror with an integrated display for the backup camera, an audible pedestrian alert system, regulatory stickers, and a real vehicle identification number (VIN). These modifications enable owners to register and insure the vehicle, then drive it on roads with speed limits up to 56 km/h, depending on state regulations.

The vehicle was originally designed for residential areas and private roads. Now the company is offering this upgrade at no extra cost to buyers. It's a strategic move reflecting a broader shift toward integrating compact vehicles into urban transport networks, especially in crowded cities where space is at a premium.
