The Kia Picanto is approaching the end of its production run, with the South Korean automaker confirming there are no plans for a next-generation model and no feasible pathway to integrate hybrid technology into its current city car architecture.

Ted Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Operations at Kia, stated that the Picanto's compact platform cannot accommodate electric or hybrid powertrain systems, placing the model at a crossroads as global emissions regulations tighten.

Regulatory Deadlines Accelerate Timeline

Under current European standards, all internal combustion engine vehicles sold after 2030 must feature some form of hybrid assistance. Starting in 2035, every new car offered for sale must be fully electric. Based on these mandates, the Kia Picanto is expected to exit production by the end of 2029.

Continuous Updates Until the Final Mile

Despite the impending discontinuation, Kia has committed to updating the Picanto to comply with the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards, aiming to extend the model's relevance for as long as possible. This approach mirrors Volkswagen Group's strategy with its petrol-powered city cars, such as the Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia.

Last Full-Petrol City Car in Key Markets

The Kia Picanto now stands as the last full-petrol city car available for sale in select markets, including the United Kingdom. Hyundai i10 production ceased earlier this year, while the Toyota Aygo X and Fiat 500 have recently received various hybrid system configurations.

Electric Alternatives on the Horizon

For buyers seeking a compact urban vehicle, the most viable options are increasingly electric. Current alternatives include the all-electric Renault Twingo and the new Volkswagen ID. models, with the ID. Lobo arriving next year. Kia is also developing a low-cost electric vehicle expected to effectively replace the Picanto in its global lineup.
