Al Nasr Automotive Plans Egyptian-Branded Car, Moves Beyond Assembly
Dr. Nabil Hammad, chairman of Al Nasr Automotive, revealed plans to produce a new car under the «Al Nasr» brand and transition from assembly to full local manufacturing. The company owns 11 factories and seeks to establish an R&D center and develop feeder industries. The announcement came during the reveal of the Dongfeng MAGE EV at its Helwan factories. Hammad called on the government to support the project to build a competitive Egyptian industrial base.
Dr. Nabil Hammad, chairman of Al Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, has unveiled plans to produce a new car carrying the «Al Nasr» brand — a strategic shift from assembling vehicles for global brands to full local manufacturing. The announcement came during a press conference revealing the new Dongfeng MAGE EV at Al Nasr's Helwan factories. The company owns 11 factories.
From Assembly to Manufacturing: Al Nasr Seeks Industrial Identity
Reopening production lines is just the beginning. Hammad explained that the company's ambition includes acquiring industrial technology and developing local engineering capabilities, enabling a gradual transition from relying on component assembly to more advanced manufacturing stages. He said the company seeks to establish a research and development center. The move reflects a desire to build a competitive Egyptian industrial base.
The 2008 Lesson: One Supplier Halted Production
A single supplier stopping production and delivery of necessary components in 2008 was among the reasons that halted output. The Al Nasr chairman recalled this experience during the conference, noting it exposes the risks industry faces when relying on external suppliers without a strong local feeder industry base. He stressed the importance of increasing reliance on locally produced components and developing feeder industries to reduce vulnerability to global supply chain shifts.
Local Components: Simple and Below Ambition
Local components currently used in car manufacturing remain largely concentrated in simple elements. Hammad noted this doesn't reflect the technological level the company aspires to reach, stressing the need to move toward manufacturing more technically and engineering-advanced components. Government support is needed.
Dongfeng MAGE EV: First Step Toward Electric
Revealing the Dongfeng MAGE EV at Al Nasr's Helwan factories signals a push toward electric vehicles. But the bigger question: can Al Nasr compete with a car bearing its own brand? The answer depends on how successfully the company builds a strong local supplier base. Hammad called on the government to support the project to produce a new car under the «Al Nasr» name — a demand reflecting the need for a legislative environment and investment incentives supporting local manufacturing.
The Road to a Fully Egyptian Car
The road is long. But the first step begins with owning the technology. The company owns 11 factories and is looking for partners to develop products carrying its own identity. Past experience taught management that relying on one supplier can be disastrous. This time, the focus is on building a strong local industrial base. The result? An Egyptian car with the «Al Nasr» badge could be on the roads soon — if things go as planned.
