3 Common Summer Mistakes That Overheat Your Engine and Lead to Costly Repairs
As temperatures soar during the summer months, car engines face greater stress than usual, especially when drivers unknowingly make common mistakes. These errors can lead to engine wear, overheating, and expensive repairs that could have been avoided.
Engine Oil: The First Line of Defense
Hamada El-Safty, manager of a car maintenance center, emphasizes that engine oil is the first line of defense for maintaining engine efficiency. Any deterioration in oil quality directly impacts engine lifespan and performance. Over time, oil loses its properties and accumulates impurities and deposits, weakening its ability to protect internal components and increasing the risk of overheating, particularly during extreme heat waves.
Mistake #1: Delaying Oil Changes
El-Safty points out that the first common mistake is delaying engine oil changes. This delay reduces lubrication and cooling efficiency, accelerates internal wear, shortens the engine's service life, and exposes it to costly breakdowns.
Mistake #2: Using Non-Spec or Low-Quality Oil
The second mistake involves using oil that does not meet manufacturer specifications or is of unknown origin. Some drivers opt for cheaper, low-quality oils to save money, but the result is often reduced lubrication and cooling performance, increased internal wear, and a shorter engine lifespan, leading to expensive failures.
Mistake #3: Relying on Unreliable Service Centers
El-Safty explains that relying on untrustworthy service centers is the third mistake. These centers may use counterfeit oil or perform maintenance unprofessionally, causing cumulative issues that may not show immediate effects but eventually cause significant engine damage over time.
Prevention Tips
The maintenance center manager stresses that summer heat amplifies the impact of these errors, noting that even minor neglect can cause rapid engine overheating and accelerated internal wear. El-Safty advises drivers to adhere to scheduled oil changes, use the recommended oil type from the manufacturer, and deal with reputable, trusted service centers. He emphasizes that prevention and regular maintenance remain far less costly than repairing or replacing an engine.
