5 Minutes Could Separate EVs from Dominating Egypt's Market: BYD Introduces Flash Charging
Al-Mansour Automotive, the exclusive local distributor for Chinese brand BYD, has announced the launch of 'Flash Charging' stations for electric vehicles in Egypt before the end of 2026. This move aims to solidify BYD's presence—the world's most widespread electric vehicle brand—in the Egyptian market, which still faces challenges due to limited EV charging infrastructure.
The 'Flash Charging' technology marks a turning point in the global EV landscape, addressing one of the biggest hurdles: lengthy charging times that previously took hours. BYD has successfully reduced the charging time for its batteries from 0 to 80% in just 5 minutes, making the process nearly as quick as refueling a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle.
According to industry experts, the successful operation of these charging stations—initially exclusive to BYD vehicles—will make the spread and dominance of electric cars in Egypt a matter of time, especially as other challenges such as pricing and local warranty are being addressed.
How Does Ultra-Fast Charging Work?
The 'Flash Charging' system relies on a high-capacity charging infrastructure developed by BYD, delivering up to 1.5 megawatts (1,500 kW)—far exceeding current fast chargers, which typically range between 150 and 350 kW. This system integrates with next-generation batteries like the Blade Battery 2.0, enhancing energy reception efficiency and enabling significantly faster charging rates without compromising performance or safety.
The core concept combines high-power charging stations with advanced energy management systems, including on-site energy storage solutions to reduce strain on the public electricity grid and provide large amounts of power instantly when needed. This design cuts charging time from low battery levels to approximately 70% within minutes under ideal conditions, while maintaining battery efficiency and longevity.
