Egypt's electric vehicle market is undergoing a radical transformation in 2025. Demand for electric SUVs has surged by over 40% compared to last year, according to official data from the automotive industry regulator. Egyptian consumers are now actively seeking practical alternatives that combine luxury with energy efficiency.

Chery Leads the New Wave

Chinese brands dominate the scene with remarkable force. The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro EV has become the top choice for Egyptian families, offering a driving range of 420 kilometers per charge. Pricing starts at EGP 1.85 million, a figure that rivals its traditional gasoline counterparts.

Competition isn't limited to China alone. European and Japanese brands are also moving in this direction, yet they face a major pricing challenge. The price gap between Chinese electric vehicles and their European counterparts reaches 30% in some segments, making the Chinese option more attractive to the Egyptian consumer at present.

Charging Infrastructure: The Biggest Hurdle

The number of fast-charging stations in Greater Cairo has doubled during the past six months. The government aims to reach 10,000 chargers by the end of 2026, but experts believe this number is still insufficient compared to the market's potential. On highways between governorates, charging stations remain scarce, which hinders long trips.

But here's the real question: will charging infrastructure grow at the same pace as EV sales? The answer will determine the future of this segment in the Egyptian market.

Taxes and Government Incentives

Customs exemptions on imported electric vehicles have provided a strong boost to sales. Customs duties have dropped to just 2%, compared to roughly 40% for conventional cars. These supportive government policies are expected to continue until at least 2027.

Forecasts indicate that Egypt's EV market will double during the coming two years, especially with new brands entering and continued government backing for the shift toward clean transportation.

BYD sales alone exceeded 800 units last month — a figure that clearly reflects the major shift in Egyptian consumer behavior toward practical electric mobility.
