Between soaring maintenance invoices, a shortage of genuine spare parts, and the proliferation of counterfeit products, car owners in Egypt find themselves trapped in a complex dilemma. Official dealerships guarantee quality but impose exorbitant costs, while cheaper alternatives may save money but compromise safety. After-sales services, spare parts, and maintenance have become one of the most contentious issues in the Egyptian automotive market, driven by rising costs, price disparities, and the spread of non-conforming parts.

The Real Cost of Car Ownership

Journalist and media figure Hisham El-Zeini emphasized that many buyers focus solely on the purchase price of a vehicle, only to discover the true cost later during ownership. He noted that some modern cars may appear attractive due to their competitive prices, but the surprise comes when repairs or replacement of essential components become necessary.

El-Zeini revealed that repairing a minor accident in some modern cars can cost between EGP 100,000, EGP 200,000, or even EGP 300,000, despite limited damage, due to high spare parts prices or availability issues. The automotive expert warned that some consumers realize too late that a low purchase price does not mean low ownership costs, and it can turn into a significant financial burden at the first accident or sudden breakdown.

Dealership Invoices: A Growing Concern Driving Customers Away

El-Zeini pointed out that maintenance invoices at authorized service centers have become a major concern for many car owners. He explained that some consumers feel they have only one option: to go to the dealership and bear the high costs to maintain their warranty or receive reliable service.

El-Zeini stressed that the price gap between official dealerships and independent workshops has widened significantly in most cases, forcing a growing number of customers, especially after the warranty period ends, to search for more affordable alternatives. He emphasized that the market needs a complete overhaul of its maintenance landscape, as price has become a decisive factor in customer decisions alongside service quality.

The 'High Copy' Trap: Counterfeit Parts Endangering Safety

Engineer Diab Fathi, manager of a car maintenance center, revealed the widespread prevalence of so-called 'high copy' spare parts. He explained that these are nothing more than products of unknown origin marketed as safe alternatives to genuine parts, calling them a major deception. Fathi warned that these parts pose a real threat to vehicle and passenger safety, especially when used in braking, suspension, and steering systems.
