Report: Volkswagen Plans to Discontinue SEAT Brand by 2029
A leaked internal document reveals Volkswagen's intention to phase out the SEAT brand by the end of 2029. SEAT sales dropped 17% last year while Cupra grew 33%, accelerating the decision. The move is part of a wider restructuring that includes cutting the model portfolio by 50% and shedding an additional 50,000 jobs. Production and sales operations will shift entirely to Cupra.
A leaked internal document suggests Volkswagen will phase out the SEAT brand entirely by the end of 2029. The plan, reported by German magazine WirtschaftsWoche, hasn't received official confirmation yet, but it outlines a full transfer of production and sales operations to Cupra, the younger Spanish brand with far stronger commercial performance.
Sales Numbers Reveal the Growing Gap Between SEAT and Cupra
The numbers paint a clear picture. Cupra and SEAT together sold 586,300 cars last year, yet Cupra's sales alone surged by 33%, while SEAT's figures dropped 17% compared to 2024. That divergence isn't accidental — it reflects years of strategic neglect.
SEAT hasn't launched an entirely new model since 2020, relying only on refreshed versions of the Ibiza, Arona, Leon, and Ateca. This development freeze pushed the brand to the margins of the group's strategy, especially as Cupra Formentor and its other models became the profit engine for younger European buyers.
Future Plan 2030 Targets Weaker Brands
The leaked document also reveals that SEAT's disappearance is just one piece of a much larger restructuring puzzle. The "Future Plan 2030" approved by the group aims to cut its entire model portfolio by around 50%, an enormous reduction that will eliminate dozens of current vehicles.
The targets are bold, but the costs are painful too. Beyond slashing excess production capacity in European factories, the group plans to cut around 50,000 jobs, adding to more than 50,000 positions already targeted in earlier rounds of austerity. Management is investing hundreds of billions of euros in the future, chasing a 9% operating profit margin by 2030.
The SEAT Ateca SUV has been the brand's backbone in recent years, but even that won't save it now. The shift toward Cupra Terramar and the broader Cupra lineup signals where the group's real priorities lie for the next decade.
