Chinese Li Auto Invades Europe: New Electric Li 6 to Rival Tesla and BMW at Paris Motor Show

Li Auto opens a new chapter. The Chinese automaker has announced it's accelerating its global expansion plan and will unveil the European version of its Li 6 electric vehicle at the Paris Motor Show this October. The decision marks a major strategic shift: in 2023, CEO Li Xiang stated that global expansion wouldn't begin before 2028, but the company has completely changed course. The goal is clear: to launch its first electric vehicle specifically for the European market before the end of 2026.

Li Auto Shifts Strategy and Enters Europe Early

Why the rush? Europe's electric vehicle market has become a true battleground, and Li Auto wants a share. The car will arrive as the Li 6 instead of Li Auto i6, with the brand name simplified to Li upon entering the continent. This identity change isn't a cosmetic detail; it's a calculated branding move to anchor the name in the European buyer's mind. Competition will be fierce, but the company knows what it wants.

Li 6 Specs: Pure Electric to Rival Tesla Model Y

The numbers are striking. Li 6 comes with five seats and is one of the company's best-selling models in China. It relies on an 87.3 kWh battery, with two options: a single rear electric motor producing 335 hp, or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 536 hp. Range reaches up to 447 miles according to the Chinese CLTC testing cycle, though figures may differ in the European version. These numbers put it in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y, the segment's most prominent rival.

Until now, Li Auto has focused on large, luxurious SUVs with extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) systems. That use a gasoline engine to generate electricity and support the battery when needed. But entering Europe with a fully electric car changes the game. The company is shifting from extended-range hybrid technology to pure electric, placing it in direct confrontation with established European brands like BMW and Mercedes.

Can Price Determine Success?

In China, the i6 starts at around $36,000. But customs duties and the different nature of European competition could push the price much higher. Can price be the decisive factor? Analysts at InsideEVs believe pricing will be critical to the Li 6's success in Europe. The company has not yet revealed European prices, but the real battle will begin when the final figure is announced. Until then, all eyes remain on Paris in October.
