Strongest Growth Since October 2023

The European car market recorded its strongest pace of growth since October 2023 during June 2026, driven by surging demand for electric vehicles. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, new car registrations across European markets rose by 13% year-on-year, reaching approximately 1.41 million units in June. This robust growth was primarily fueled by battery electric vehicles, which compensated for the sharp decline in sales of traditional petrol and diesel cars.

EV Registrations Jump 51%

Battery electric vehicles were the main growth driver, with registrations surging by 51% compared to the same month last year. This performance reflects an accelerating shift in consumer preferences across the continent, as electric vehicles are no longer just an alternative but the fastest-growing segment in the market. In contrast, internal combustion engine vehicles continued to lose market share, with petrol car registrations falling by 12.2% and diesel car sales dropping by 16.9%, highlighting the widening gap between the two categories.

These figures reveal a deep structural transformation in the European market, driven by stricter emissions regulations, the expansion of new EV models from manufacturers, the growing charging infrastructure network, and incentives offered by several governments. This landscape puts increasing pressure on traditional carmakers to accelerate their electric transition plans and reduce production costs.

Chinese Brands Growing Faster

While European automakers still lead in total sales volume, Chinese brands recorded significantly faster growth rates. BYD was among the biggest beneficiaries of this shift, with its new car registrations more than doubling year-on-year to reach approximately 38,460 units across the European Union, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This strong performance indicates that competition in the European market is no longer limited to traditional major manufacturers.

Competitive Pricing and Advanced Technology

Competitive pricing, advanced technology, and driving range have become decisive factors in European consumers' purchasing decisions. Chinese manufacturers leverage their ability to offer diverse electric models at attractive price points, putting European companies under mounting pressure to speed up their electric transformation and cut costs. The June figures confirm that electric vehicles have transformed from a supporting growth category into the main driver of car sales in Europe, paving the way for a new era of electric mobility across the continent.
