Chevrolet Exits China After Sales Plummet 99%
The decision hardly came as a surprise. Chevrolet has officially halted vehicle sales in China, following a dramatic decline that saw deliveries drop from over 767,000 units in 2014 to fewer than 9,000 last year — a staggering 98.8% fall in just over a decade.
That number tells a story of a brand losing its footing in the world's largest auto market. The American marque had been present in China for roughly 21 years, but intense competition from domestic and global rivals pushed it to a point of no return, according to Chinese reports tracking the steady slide since 2014.
GM Pivots to Buick and Cadillac
GM had already signaled its shift in strategy. The company recently announced it would focus more on Buick and Cadillac in China, brands that have performed far better, especially with the new Electra lineup gaining traction. Chevrolet's local lineup, including models like Malibu, Equinox. Cruze, struggled against the rapid shift to new energy vehicles.
Yet GM isn't abandoning China entirely. Instead, Chevrolet will continue manufacturing vehicles in China through its joint venture with SAIC, but those vehicles will now be built exclusively for export to markets outside China. The local factories remain vital to the brand's global production network, even as domestic sales come to an end.
A 20-Year Extension for the Joint Venture
GM and SAIC have agreed to extend their partnership for another 20 years, a clear sign of long-term commitment to co-production. The duo plans to launch at least 30 new energy vehicles by 2030, covering both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. That includes "deploying more China-developed technology solutions for the Chinese market," according to a joint statement at the time of the announcement.
The new chapter looks vastly different from the old one. While China once served as a major sales hub for Chevrolet's gasoline-powered sedans and SUVs, the focus now shifts entirely to electrified vehicles that align with Beijing's green push. For Chevrolet, the road ahead may be brighter elsewhere, where the brand still enjoys strong loyalty in markets like North America and the Middle East.
