Super Black Paint Banned in Some European Countries.. Here's Why
Unexpected move from German authorities. Certain car paint shades can actually be prohibited in Germany, where the law strictly regulates paint colors. Any unusual paint job may lead to an individual inspection of the car and a driving ban, because what matters isn't the color itself but how it affects visibility and safety for everyone on the road.
Ultra-Black Paints Are Forbidden
The numbers don't lie. German authorities specifically warn against ultra-black paints like Vantablack and Musou Black, which absorb so much light that the car's outlines become nearly impossible to distinguish. Highly reflective surfaces painted in bright silver or similar shades can blind other road users, which explains why such finishes face such heavy scrutiny.
Camouflage Is Also Off the Table
German law also prohibits mimicking official vehicles. Camouflage patterns alone are acceptable, but a private car can't imitate military vehicles, police cars, fire engines, or ambulances. Using official emblems, police-like lights, or special sirens is strictly forbidden with no exceptions whatsoever.
Window Tint and Stickers Rules
Stickers are fine as long as they don't cover headlights, reflectors, license plates, or the driver's view. The windshield can only be tinted in the permitted strip at the top, while side front windows can't be tinted at all. Heavy rear tinting is allowed provided the vehicle has two exterior mirrors. That remains the key condition for approval.
Reregistration After Repaint
After a full repaint, there's no immediate need to update German registration documents. Yet officials still recommend reporting the new color during reregistration, ownership changes, or when issuing new papers, since the final paint is recorded in the central registry. Best advice? Choose your color wisely before you regret it.
