Local Assembly Drives Nissan and Chery to Top Egypt Car Sales
The numbers tell the story clearly. Nissan has topped Egypt's passenger car sales rankings for the first five months of this year, capturing a 19.6% market share with total sales reaching 10,814 vehicles. The report from the Automotive Market Information Council paints a comprehensive picture of the local market's performance.
Brand Rankings and Market Shares
Chery secured second place with a 13.4% market share, recording sales of 10,075 cars. The gap between first and second is razor-thin. MG landed in third with 12.7% and 6,598 units sold, while Hyundai took fourth place at 9.2% with 6,326 vehicles sold.
Toyota came fifth with a 6.1% share and 4,301 units moved. The competition is fierce at every level. Changan ranked sixth at 5.4% with 4,221 sales, followed by BAIC in seventh at 5.3% and 2,788 vehicles. Chevrolet closed out the top eight with a 4.8% market share and 2,566 units sold during the January-to-May period.
Local Assembly as the Growth Engine
The reason is direct and clear. Montaser Zaitoun, member of the General Union of Car Dealers, said the local market has experienced significant growth recently, driven by dealers expanding their new model offerings. Zaitoun attributed Nissan and Chery's leadership to the revival of local assembly operations for several of their models. That directly boosted supply in the market.
Local assembly has rewritten the competitive landscape entirely. The newly assembled models offered compelling price-to-specification ratios, pushing demand to unprecedented levels. Egypt's automotive market is accelerating toward domestic production as its core strategy.
