Fresh figures reveal the real pulse of the Egyptian car market during July. The report issued by the Egyptian Insurance Federation on mandatory vehicle insurance tracked the most active traffic units and the number of cars entering the country through border crossings. New Cairo is topping the scene once again.

Most Active Traffic Units in July

The New Cairo traffic unit held its ground firmly, registering 2,383 vehicles during the month. The gap with its closest competitors is significant, a number reflecting heavy activity on the eastern side of the capital. Nasr City traffic unit claimed second place with 1,564 vehicles, while Faisal's unit ranked third with 1,508 vehicles. Abis took the fourth spot.

This same ranking raises a critical question about why these specific units dominate the list. Activity in Nasr City and Faisal points to high population density and a vigorous second-hand market, while the geographic spread of the four units suggests a concentration of transactions in specific zones of Greater Cairo and Alexandria. The numbers speak volumes about market size and where it's heading.

Border Crossings and Customs Data

Some 23,716 customs-cleared cars entered Egypt through its border posts in July, a figure that deserves attention as it shows the continued flow of vehicles from abroad despite all the challenges. The Salloum crossing topped the list with a massive lead, recording 16,001 cars and vehicles during the month, underlining the western border post's pivotal role in feeding the local market with imported cars, particularly European models via Libya.

Nuweiba crossing came second with a far smaller volume of just 2,207 vehicles in the same period. The wide chasm between the two ports tells a different story entirely, as Salloum dominates import traffic while Nuweiba remains limited in its impact despite its strategic location on the Red Sea. But the full picture becomes clearer when examining the overall licensing numbers.

Total Licensing and Fuel Type Breakdown

A total of 463,611 used cars were licensed in Egypt during July, a massive number that reflects the continued heavy reliance on pre-owned vehicles and their circulation among citizens, especially under current economic conditions that push new cars out of reach for a large segment of buyers. The market is clearly moving in this direction.

The breakdown of licensed vehicles by fuel type offers an intriguing snapshot. Gasoline-powered vehicles took the lion's share with 324,990 cars licensed. Diesel vehicles came second with 107,449 units, followed by dual gasoline and natural gas cars at 11,335 vehicles. Electric cars logged just 2,289 units during the month, a signal that adoption is still in its early stages across the Egyptian market. Pure natural gas vehicles barely reached 44 units in the month, a tiny number that underscores the limited shift toward this fuel type among newly licensed cars.
