Egyptian Auto Market Hits 17,000 Vehicles in May 2026 with 18% Growth
The numbers speak for themselves. Egypt's auto market recorded a significant surge in vehicle sales during May 2026, approaching the 17,000-unit mark. Data from the Egyptian Automotive Market Information Council (AMIC) confirms the upward trajectory. The market is moving — and the data proves it.
Total Sales in May
Total vehicle sales in Egypt jumped nearly 18% in May 2026, reaching 16,908 units. That compares with 14,301 vehicles sold during the same month last year. Month-over-month, the picture is equally strong — sales rose from 15,330 units in April 2026 to 16,908 in May. A net gain of over 1,500 vehicles in just thirty days.
Passenger Cars and Buses Surge
The passenger car segment — known locally as 'Melaki' — grew 10% year-on-year, with 12,278 units sold versus 11,128 in May 2025. But the real standout was the bus category. Sales of buses skyrocketed more than 97%, totaling 1,563 units compared to just 792 in May 2025. A near-doubling that reshapes the segment entirely.
Trucks and EVs Gain Ground
Truck and commercial vehicle sales rose 29% in May, hitting 3,067 units. Yet the biggest headline belongs to electric vehicles. EV sales exploded by 665% year-on-year, with 352 units sold in May 2026 — up from a negligible base the previous year. The shift is small but accelerating.
Five-Month Totals: Local vs. Imported
Looking at the first five months of 2026, locally-manufactured vehicle sales climbed 30% to 43,466 units, up from 33,490 in the same period last year. Imported passenger cars performed even better — sales jumped 54% to 37,905 units, compared with 24,590 during January-May 2025. The gap is real, and it reflects an increasingly hungry market.
