Egypt to Establish Tire Factory with $500 Million Investment
Egypt's government is moving forward with plans to launch a new factory dedicated to producing tires for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, backed by investments of roughly $500 million. The goal is straightforward. Bridging the gap between local output and the market's enormous appetite, while slashing reliance on imports that drain foreign currency reserves.
Staggering Numbers in Egypt's Tire Market
Official documents reveal that Egypt needs around 500,000 tires annually, yet imports nearly 8 million units every year. The cost? About $1.25 billion leaving the country annually. These figures underscore the scale of the challenge facing the government in developing the automotive supply chain sector.
Chinese Sailun Takes the Lead
Chinese company Sailun currently stands as the only player in the country's passenger car tire manufacturing segment, with production expected to begin in the Suez Canal Economic Zone soon. But the market demands more. This new project aims to end that monopoly and add entirely fresh production capacity.
10th of Ramadan City Picked for the Plant
The new facility is slated for the industrial zone in 10th of Ramadan City, covering 217 feddans, in partnership with the private sector. The project falls under the supervision of the Ministry of State for Military Production. The location is no coincidence — it sits at the heart of Egypt's most industrious zone.
Strikingly, most existing tire plants in the local market focus on producing tires for buses and trucks, plus two-wheelers and the three-wheeled vehicles locally known as tuk-tuks. The passenger car segment remained nearly untouched. This new factory could dramatically alter that equation.
