Egypt's EV Sales Surge in July as Geely Takes the Lead
The numbers tell a compelling story. Egypt's electric vehicle market welcomed 2,288 new units during July, edging past June's total of 2,233 vehicles as reported by the Egyptian Compulsory Vehicle Insurance Pool. The momentum is building steadily.
Passenger electric cars accounted for the lion's share of that volume with 1,644 units sold, underscoring that private transport remains the engine of adoption. It's a modest increase month-on-month, yet it reveals a persistent shift toward electric mobility in the Egyptian automotive landscape.
July Rankings and the Shifting Battlefield
Competition is fierce at the top. Geely dominated the chart with 225 units sold, while Rox and Dibal tied for second place at 122 units each, leaving Nissan in fourth with 114 registrations. The list goes deeper — BYD took fifth with 110 vehicles. DFSK secured sixth place at 87 units.
Geely didn't just top the board; it engineered a significant jump from its June position of third place with 143 sales. A remarkable surge driven largely by the popularity of the Geely EX2 crossover among Egyptian buyers. Perhaps the bigger headline was Nissan's comeback, entering the monthly count after being entirely absent from June's top sellers.
What about the rest of the field? Fortheng claimed seventh place with 74 units, followed closely by Zeekr at 69 vehicles. Expeng and MG completed the top ten with 52 and 49 units respectively, with the MG4 being the priciest model in that bracket. Mercedes-Benz entered at eleventh with 42 cars, while BMW trailed just behind at 41. Avatar closed the roster at 37 units. A diverse mix that highlights growing competition across multiple price points.
A Tale of Two Months: June vs. July Shift
The contrast is striking. BYD went from dominating June with 168 sales to a humbling fifth place in July — a dramatic slide that reshuffled the entire order. Meanwhile, Dibal managed to stay in contention, slipping from second to third while maintaining a consistent presence in both monthly reports.
Volkswagen disappeared from July's ranking entirely after posting 78 units in June, raising questions about its short-term positioning in the Egyptian market. DFSK experienced a modest dip, moving from 106 units down to 87, yet still holding its ground among the leaders. Zeekr saw its numbers retreat by 37 vehicles compared to the previous month.
The bigger takeaway from these figures is that Egypt's EV market is no longer the playground of a few dominant players. With more models entering at varied price thresholds, the landscape looks ready for intensified rivalry in the months ahead. All eyes now turn to the next set of data to see who can sustain — or reclaim — their position in one of the region's fastest-growing sectors.
