Alexandria Metro Project: By the Numbers – A Game Changer for Urban Mobility
The Alexandria Metro project stands as one of the most significant electric mass transit initiatives currently underway in Egypt. It serves as a cornerstone for developing the mobility system within Alexandria Governorate and enhancing connectivity between its various districts, aligning with the state's strategy to expand modern and sustainable public transport.
Addressing Population Growth and Easing Traffic
The project is designed to keep pace with the rising population and passenger numbers by providing a fast, safe, and environmentally friendly transport option. It aims to reduce reliance on private cars and alleviate pressure on the governorate's road network and main arteries.
Phase One Details and Progress
The first phase of the project is showing notable progress, extending from Abu Qir Station in the east to Misr Station, covering a length of 22 kilometers, with an implementation rate of approximately 47%. The route consists of a surface section stretching 6.5 kilometers from Misr Station to before Al-Dhahiriya Station, plus an elevated section of 15.5 kilometers reaching Abu Qir Station.
This initial phase includes 20 stations: 6 surface-level and 14 elevated. The line will be operated by 21 trains, totaling 189 carriages, manufactured locally by the Egyptian National Railway Industries Company (NERIC). This step reflects the state's direction towards boosting local manufacturing and localizing modern transport technology.
A Leap in Operational Efficiency
The project is expected to bring a major transformation to Alexandria's public transport system. The line's capacity will surge from approximately 2,850 passengers per hour per direction to 60,000 passengers per hour per direction, meeting the growing demand for mass transit within the governorate.
Furthermore, the project will cut travel time between the line's endpoints nearly in half, dropping from 50 minutes to just 25 minutes. This is accompanied by an increase in operational speed from 25 km/h to 100 km/h. Additionally, the headway between trains will be reduced from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes, enhancing service regularity and operational efficiency.
Integration with the Modern Transport Network
The project's importance extends beyond developing a new transit line; it plays a pivotal role in achieving integration among various transport modes within the governorate. It will connect with the Cairo-Alexandria railway line, the Raml Tram, and the Rashid railway line, in addition to future connectivity with the high-speed electric train network. This integration enhances the overall efficiency of the transport network and facilitates the movement of citizens between different destinations.
