5 New Road and Bridge Projects Are Changing Traffic in Alexandria and Kafr El Sheikh
The Ministry of Housing is pushing forward with a package of road, axis, and bridge projects in Alexandria and Kafr El Sheikh governorates, aiming to upgrade the road network, improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and strengthen links between cities, vital areas, and the national road grid. Engineer Randa El Menshawy, Minister of Housing and Urban Utilities, is personally tracking progress—these projects are being executed by the Central Agency for Reconstruction through its North Coast Central Authority. On-site supervision is constant, and deadlines are strictly enforced.
New Roads to Ease Pressure in Kafr El Sheikh
In Kafr El Sheikh, the focus is on several corridors designed to give drivers alternative routes, ease the load on existing roads. Connect different areas more efficiently. One standout project is the Abu El Rous – Matoubes – Fouh feeder, a vital link feeding the coastal international highway. Phase two runs 16 kilometers, extending from the end of phase one at the Abu Donia/Abu El Rous entrance to the Fouh bridge over the Rashid branch. It's built as a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. drivers in Alexandria will notice the difference.
The project includes 14 overhead bridges and one surface bridge, plus irrigation and drainage culverts. That's a major step in reducing conflict points with water channels and local roads. The first phase, 15.2 kilometers long and 21 meters wide, already has two lanes per direction, seven surface bridges, and one overhead bridge. Kafr El Sheikh traffic is set to get smoother.
A New Transverse Axis Serving Cars and Production Zones
Progress also covers the Riyadh – Sidi Salem road, stretching nearly 36 kilometers—a fresh transverse axis across the northern Delta. The goal is to cut density on existing routes and link the Kafr El Sheikh/Baltim feeder with the Matoubes/Abu El Rous/Fouh feeder, giving drivers an alternative path. Road users will benefit.
But it's not just about cars. This road also serves fish farms, industrial areas, and land reclamation zones, boosting product transport and services. The ongoing work extends the Mahmoudiya axis, providing a direct connection between the coastal highway and the agricultural road. Commuters in Alexandria will see shorter travel times. Kafr El Sheikh connections are improving.
These projects are part of a broader plan to overhaul Egypt's infrastructure in high-density areas, with a focus on upgrading the national road network and offering safe, fast alternatives. As construction continues, the ministry stresses the importance of supporting road transport and enhancing driver experience. Once completed, these corridors should deliver significant reductions in travel time and operating costs, plus improved safety through fewer at-grade intersections and safer overhead bridges.
