327,000 Lego Pieces at 111 km/h: A Hypercar Enters the Record Books
A specialized team of engineers and designers has successfully built a full-scale model of the Koenigsegg "Saders Speer" using approximately 327,000 Lego Technic pieces, achieving a groundbreaking engineering feat. The unconventional vehicle reached a top speed of 111 kilometers per hour, entering the world of record-breaking and blending construction toys with hypercar technology.
Black and Orange Design with Real Components
The model features a black exterior with orange accents inspired by the original car, but it was not designed for display only. It was developed into a drivable vehicle, equipped with real components and advanced safety systems that enable it to reach unprecedented speeds for a car covered in plastic bricks, marking a significant evolution in the concept of construction-based models.
Speed Target Started at 100 km/h and Exceeded Expectations
The project idea began last summer, with actual work starting in October, and the design and construction process took about seven and a half months. Lubor Zelinka, Head of Design at Lego, explained that the team's primary goal was to build the fastest full-scale car using Lego Technic pieces, with an initial target speed of 100 kilometers per hour. However, final tests exceeded expectations, as the car reached 111 km/h in an industrial area in the city of Kladno, located approximately 32 kilometers west of the Czech capital, Prague.
Not Just a Giant Toy: Steel Frame and Roll Cage
Although the exterior body is almost entirely made of Lego pieces, the car relies on a specially designed metal base, along with a roll cage compliant with FIA standards. It also features genuine carbon fiber wheels from Koenigsegg, fitted with Pirelli tires, along with a real suspension system and disc brakes inspired by racing cars, all concealed behind brake calipers made from Lego Technic pieces. The model weighs approximately 1,800 kilograms, making reaching this speed a significant engineering challenge, especially given the exterior body's reliance on hundreds of thousands of small pieces.
Ghost Mode Adds to Project Complexity
The project also included simulating the famous "Ghost Mode" in Koenigsegg cars, which allows a large number of body panels to open simultaneously to reveal the internal components. This requirement pushed the design team to develop the largest number of movable and openable parts in a full-scale model ever built by Lego, raising the complexity level and transforming the project from a display model into an actual drivable car, using pieces inspired by spaceships and trains to achieve the required flexibility.
