The Cairo University Eco Racing Team from the Faculty of Engineering has achieved a significant international milestone by becoming the first Egyptian, Arab, and African team to successfully pass the rigorous Technical Inspection stage at the Shell Eco-Marathon Autonomous Driving Competition, which is currently taking place in Poland. The accomplishment marks an important step for autonomous vehicle development, confirming that the team's self-driving vehicle has met the technical requirements needed to compete on the international stage.

Ready for International Autonomous Racing

Successfully completing the Technical Inspection officially confirms that Egypt's first fully autonomous car is prepared to participate in international racing events. The vehicle passed all mandatory safety evaluations along with comprehensive mechanical and electrical inspections, demonstrating compliance with the strict engineering standards required for one of the world's leading autonomous driving competitions.

Engineered Entirely by Cairo University Students

Cairo University stated that the vehicle was designed and built entirely by students from the Faculty of Engineering. It features an integrated system equipped with advanced sensors capable of analyzing the surrounding environment in real time, alongside artificial intelligence technologies that determine the driving path and avoid obstacles autonomously. The system has been developed to achieve high levels of safety while maintaining efficient energy consumption.

The Cairo University Eco Racing Team, established in 2012, includes approximately 120 male and female students from different academic years and engineering disciplines. Over the years, the team has represented Egypt in numerous international engineering competitions, building extensive experience in developing high-efficiency vehicles and innovative automotive engineering projects.

Strong Results Build on Previous Success

This latest achievement follows the team's participation in the Shell Eco-marathon Qatar 2026 competition at Lusail Circuit, where it secured fourth place in the Urban Concept Gasoline category with an efficiency of 95.5 kilometers per liter. The team also completed the Prototype Electric category with an efficiency of 104.8 kilometers per kilowatt-hour. Cairo University stated that this accomplishment represents another step toward strengthening its position in engineering and artificial intelligence while highlighting the ability of its students to transform scientific knowledge into innovative engineering applications capable of competing in international events.
