Egypt's High-Speed Rail: Siemens Partnership and the Sokhna-Matrouh Line Driving Vision 2030
660 kilometers linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inspected the Matrouh station of Egypt's electric high-speed rail network, part of the first line extending from Sokhna to Alexandria, El Alamein, and Matrouh. The project is a cornerstone of the country's sustainable transport strategy.
Matrouh Station: Impressive Numbers and Specs
The station, one of three terminals on the line, sits on a total area of 367,000 square meters. The main building and platforms cover about 30,000 square meters, housing commercial and investment zones designed to maximize economic returns. Car parks accommodate up to 896 private vehicles, along with 52 buses and 20 cars for people with disabilities.
The station building rises three levels: ground floor, mezzanine, and first floor. The numbers inside are equally telling: 21 technical rooms and 46 commercial and investment areas, including 7 cafés, 11 retail shops. 28 commercial or hotel zones. Getting around is effortless — 6 fixed staircases, 4 escalators, and 2 elevators for passengers.
World-Class Infrastructure for Passengers and Freight
Four platforms serve three tracks and six rails, all equipped with 22 fixed stairs, 14 escalators, and 11 electric elevators. Each platform stretches 420 meters, allowing various train types to operate efficiently. A freight handling yard sits at the station's southern end, facilitating cargo transfer between the rail network and trucks.
The Siemens partnership is more than a contract — it's a transformation. The 660-kilometer first line is a key component of the Sokhna-Dekheila logistics corridor, cementing Egypt's status as a regional transport hub. Industrial, urban, and tourism hubs now connect seamlessly.
Switching to electric trains slashes fossil fuel consumption dramatically. Vision 2030 demands smart, sustainable infrastructure, and this project delivers exactly that. Fast, safe, eco-friendly electric trains now link Sokhna to Matrouh and Alexandria, passing through new cities and thriving communities along the way.
