Honda Eyes an Accord SUV with a New Hybrid Powertrain, a Modern CrossTour Successor
Honda is plotting a bold move. The Japanese automaker is considering a lifted Accord model aimed squarely at Subaru Outback fans, after Subaru stopped making the Outback wagon version and went all-in on SUVs. The plan could redraw the segment map.
Project Details Emerge
According to Automotive News, Honda hasn't made a final call yet — the project is still under study. If greenlit, production would start in the second half of 2029 at the company's Marysville, Ohio plant. That already builds the Accord sedan. An internal planning document, cited by the source, reportedly names the upcoming model "Accord SUV." Timing is critical here.
The new model will arrive alongside the next-gen Accord sedan, scheduled for 2030. That timeline lines up with reports of broader delays across Honda's lineup. But the big question isn't the calendar — it's what's under the hood.
Next-Generation Hybrid System
Both the sedan and the possible SUV will use Honda's next-generation hybrid powertrain. It features a new direct-injection engine, a new generator motor, and a new battery pack. Official specs aren't out yet, but the promise of higher efficiency and lower consumption is clear. The hardware looks ready for a fight.
A Fresh Take on the CrossTour Legacy
If it happens, the Accord SUV would become a modern successor to the Accord CrossTour — a model that never really took off. Launched in 2010, the CrossTour was a tall hatchback-wagon mashup sharing the Accord's 3.5-liter V6, but sitting higher and stretching a few inches longer. Honda killed it in 2015 due to weak sales. Times have changed. SUV demand is booming, and this time around, the market might just be ready.
