Volkswagen Posts Biggest Delivery Drop in 4 Years
Volkswagen reported a 14.3% decline in global deliveries for Q3 2026, reaching 1.89 million vehicles—its steepest quarterly fall in over four years. China led the slump with a 38.5% drop in Q3 and 30.2% over nine months, amid fierce local competition. Weakness spread to North America and Western Europe, while Central and Eastern Europe saw slight growth. Pressure also hits Porsche and Mercedes-Benz in the Chinese market.
Volkswagen reported a 14.3% decline in global deliveries for the third quarter of 2026, dropping to 1.89 million vehicles. That marks its steepest quarterly fall in over four years. The numbers are brutal for the German giant.
The biggest pain came from China. Volkswagen's deliveries there plunged 38.5% in Q3, and 30.2% over the first nine months of 2026. China is no longer the paradise it once was. Local competition is fierce, demand is shrinking.
China Pulls the Rug from Under Volkswagen
Martin Zander, a member of the group's extended executive committee, described the situation bluntly: the sharp decline in the Chinese market remains a challenge for the entire automotive industry. His words reflect growing German anxiety. Foreign automakers are losing ground in the world's largest car market.
The declines didn't stop at China. In North America, deliveries fell 5.8%. Western Europe recorded a 2.8% drop. But Central and Eastern Europe told a completely different story, with deliveries up 1.4%. A clear divergence in market performance.
Pressure Spreads to Porsche and Mercedes
This retreat follows days after Porsche and Mercedes-Benz announced declines in their China deliveries. The picture is clear: the entire German auto industry is under mounting pressure in the Chinese market. It's not just Volkswagen.
The current drop is the largest since a 22.4% decline in Q2 2022. Back then, the crisis was different. Now the challenge runs deeper: a structural shift in Chinese demand. Competition from local companies sweeping the market with competitively priced electric vehicles. Volkswagen faces a tough battle to hold its share. Its key markets are no longer moving in its favor.
