Matrouh High-Speed Electric Train Station: Inside Egypt's Massive National Project

Massive scale, complete facilities. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inspected the high-speed electric train station in Matrouh Governorate during a field visit to development projects along the Mediterranean coast. The station serves as one of three terminal stops on the first line of Egypt's high-speed electric rail network stretching from Sokhna to Matrouh.

Station Specs and Layout

The numbers are striking. The station sits on a total area of 367,000 square meters, while the main building and platforms cover roughly 30,000 square meters — a clear reflection of the project's enormous scope. The station building rises three levels, including the ground floor, mezzanine, and first floor, all equipped with dedicated departure and arrival zones.

Interior Features and Amenities

Details reveal a focus on passenger comfort. The building houses 21 technical rooms and 46 commercial and investment areas, including 7 cafés, 11 retail shops. 28 hotel or commercial investment zones. Six fixed staircases, four escalators, and two elevators handle passenger movement throughout the facility.

The station's infrastructure includes 4 platforms serving 3 tracks and 6 rail lines, with each platform stretching 420 meters. South of the station, a dedicated yard handles freight transfer operations, supporting the Sokhna–Dekheila logistics corridor.

Why This Project Matters

This is far more than a single station. The first line of the high-speed network spans 660 kilometers, forming a critical component of the strategic logistics corridor. Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir and Ibrahim Bakheet, deputy head of the National Authority for Tunnels, accompanied the Prime Minister during the tour.

Madbouly emphasized that the project reflects the state's push toward modern, sustainable transportation systems that are safe, fast, and environmentally friendly. The network aims to integrate industrial, urban. Tourism zones while cementing Egypt's position as a regional transport and logistics hub. Parking facilities at Matrouh station accommodate 896 private cars, 52 superjet buses. 20 vehicles reserved for people with disabilities, alongside several service buildings.
