The number is unprecedented. Data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that new energy vehicle sales accounted for more than 60% of all new car sales in China during July, marking the first time the monthly share has reached such a historic level, while the cumulative share for the first seven months of the year has now crossed the 50% threshold.

Production and Sales Figures for July

Output was just as strong. Production of new energy vehicles exceeded 1.57 million units in July alone, while sales surpassed 1.56 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 26.8% and 23.7% respectively. Within these figures, both production and sales of pure battery electric vehicles topped one million units during the month, surging more than 30% compared to the same period last year.

First Seven Months of 2026 in Review

The cumulative pace paints an even clearer picture. Between January and the end of July 2026, new energy vehicle production reached 9.01 million units, with sales hitting 9 million units, an increase of roughly 10% year-on-year. Total car production in China during July stood at 2.57 million units, while sales reached 2.58 million units, reflecting a slight decline on both monthly and annual bases, a dip the association attributes to seasonal factors.

Export Momentum Continues

Chinese auto exports kept their strong upward trajectory. Vehicle exports exceeded 1.04 million units in July for the second consecutive month, while new energy vehicle exports jumped by approximately 1.5 times to reach 553,000 units, representing more than half of total vehicle exports for two straight months. From January through July, cumulative vehicle exports hit 6.14 million units, up 66.8% year-on-year, including 2.91 million new energy vehicles, an increase of 1.2 times. The numbers make one thing clear. China's shift toward electric mobility is no longer just a trend — it's a dominating reality.
