China August Sales: EVs Dominate Top 20 as Geely EX2 Leads
Electric vehicles swept nine of the top ten spots in China's August passenger car sales rankings, with the Geely EX2 leading at 39,651 units. The Toyota Corolla Cross was the first gasoline car to appear, landing at number thirteen with 14,675 units. Year-to-date, the Geely EX2 has sold 266,166 units, ahead of Tesla Model Y at 226,931. The data underscores China's accelerating shift toward full electrification.
Electric cars claimed nine of the top ten spots in China's passenger vehicle sales rankings for August, with the Geely EX2 leading the pack at 39,651 units sold. The only exception among the top ten was the BYD Fang Cheng Bao Ti7. That offers both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid versions. Battery-electric models accounted for 55% of Ti7 sales.
Pure Electric Power Takes Over the Podium
No gasoline car made it into the top ten. The first internal combustion engine vehicle to appear was the Toyota Corolla Cross at number thirteen with 14,675 units sold. This marks the second month this year that ICE vehicles have been shut out of China's top ten best-sellers. The message is blunt: the world's largest car market is going electric, fast.
Geely EX2 Leads the Year-to-Date Race
The Geely EX2, also known as Xingyuan, also tops the 2026 year-to-date ranking (January–August) as China's best-selling electric car with 266,166 units. Tesla Model Y follows at 226,931 units, while the Li Auto i6 sits third with 152,845 units. Local Chinese brands continue to outpace global rivals on their home turf.
