Ceer Unveils Exobot: Saudi Arabia's First Electric Car Inspired by Sci-Fi Film

Saudi startup Ceer has unveiled its first two all-electric models under the name "Exobot," marking a major step in the kingdom's push to build a domestic auto industry. The lineup includes a luxury sedan and a four-wheel-drive SUV, with sales in Saudi Arabia expected to begin in early 2027, according to Reuters. The design is inspired by vehicles from the sci-fi film "Tron," featuring gullwing doors that open upward. But what does this launch really mean for the region's EV market?

Global Partnerships Build a Saudi Car

This is no solo effort. Ceer is a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and Taiwan's Foxconn, giving it a strong technical foundation from day one. Foxconn provided the electrical architecture, while BMW handled engineering work. That mix of Asian manufacturing expertise and German engineering sets the Exobot apart from previous attempts at car manufacturing in the region. Several major auto suppliers—including American, Korean, German. Chinese firms—have already set up factories in Saudi Arabia with government incentives.

Bold Design Meets Production Challenges

Gullwing doors aren't the only striking detail. Ceer CEO Jim DeLuca said the company removed traditional pillars between front and rear seats and used high-strength materials for structural support. That engineering choice reflects a desire to deliver a more spacious and distinctive interior experience. "We wanted to make sure the world can see what Saudi Arabia can offer," DeLuca said. The "Tron"-inspired design may attract a new generation of buyers, yet it also raises questions about mass production at a reasonable cost. Gullwing doors are technically complex and expensive to manufacture, potentially hindering volume production, especially in the early stages.

Ambitious Expansion Plans Through 2030

After launching the Exobot, Ceer plans to roll out five more models between 2028 and 2030. The future lineup won't be purely electric. The company intends to add plug-in hybrids and internal combustion engine vehicles, responding to shifting demand across different markets. That diversity reflects an understanding that the shift to full electrification isn't moving at the same pace everywhere. Some markets still rely heavily on gasoline, and hybrids offer a practical middle ground. Ceer wants to cover every segment, from luxury to practical, and from electric to conventional.

Can Saudi Arabia's First Car Compete?

The regional market is already crowded. Tesla dominates the luxury EV segment, BYD competes aggressively in the mid-range. Hyundai offers electric options at competitive prices. Ceer's entry means direct competition with established global brands. Yet Ceer's advantage is its "Made in Saudi" label and backing from Vision 2030. Saudi consumers may rally behind a local product, especially if it delivers quality and value. Success won't hinge on flashy design alone—it will depend on real-world performance, after-sales service, and spare parts availability. Those factors will determine whether the Exobot marks the true beginning of a Saudi auto industry or remains just another experimental project.
