Electric and Hybrid Cars Now Account for a Quarter of Global Auto Sales
The global automotive industry is witnessing an unprecedented shift towards electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, with sales reaching historic levels. For the first time, this category now accounts for approximately one out of every four new cars sold worldwide. This massive momentum is driven by several key factors, including a significant drop in lithium-ion battery costs, an aggressive expansion of competitive Chinese models, and a growing consumer desire to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Record-Breaking Sales Figures in 2025
According to the latest estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA) in its Global EV Outlook 2026 report, global sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles surpassed the 20 million unit mark during 2025. This staggering figure represents roughly a quarter of all new car sales worldwide, reflecting the accelerating pace of the green mobility transition. The agency forecasts that sales will continue their strong growth trajectory, reaching over 23 million vehicles by 2026, driven by further improvements in battery technology and increasingly competitive pricing.
China Leads the Global Race with Dominance
China continues to dominate the global electric vehicle landscape, capturing the largest share of sales. IEA data indicates that the Chinese market alone sold more than 13 million electric vehicles during 2025. This remarkable success is underpinned by a massive industrial base, integrated supply chains, and highly competitive pricing, fueled by the widespread presence of major brands such as BYD, Geely, and Chery, making China the most influential market in shaping global industry trends.
Europe Regains Growth Momentum
In contrast, the European electric vehicle market has rebounded strongly after a period of relative slowdown. EV sales in Europe exceeded 4 million vehicles during 2025, capturing a market share of approximately 28% of total new car sales on the continent. This resurgence is primarily driven by stricter emissions regulations and the expansion of more affordable models. Growth is expected to continue through 2026 as more Chinese, Korean, and European models enter the competitive arena.
The Role of Hybrids in Emerging Markets
Despite the strong rise of fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids continue to play a crucial role in the transition. They offer an attractive compromise for customers who want to reduce fuel consumption without relying entirely on external charging infrastructure. This option is particularly well-suited for markets like Egypt and the broader Arab region, where charging networks are still in the early stages of expansion, and consumers prioritize longer driving range and lower operating costs.
Key Factors Accelerating the Green Shift
This accelerated global growth is linked to several interconnected factors. Chief among them is the continuous decline in battery prices, which directly reduces the overall cost of electric vehicles. Furthermore, the steady increase in driving range per charge, the expansion of fast-charging networks, and the intensifying competition among manufacturers are all driving faster adoption rates. Additionally, Chinese automakers have played a pivotal role in lowering the entry barrier to the electric vehicle world by offering highly equipped models at significantly lower prices than many traditional competitors, effectively tightening the noose on the reign of conventional gasoline engines.
