Toyota Urban Cruiser is the name on everyone's lips in the Egyptian auto industry right now. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Toshimitsu Imai, CEO and board member of Toyota Tsusho Corporation, on Monday at the New Administrative Capital to discuss expanding the group's investments in the country. The meeting zeroed in on vehicle assembly operations, a sector where Toyota Tsusho already has significant skin in the game.

A Decade of Local Assembly: The Fortuner Legacy

The relationship between Toyota Tsusho and local assembly in Egypt goes back years. The group has been part of the entity overseeing the assembly of the Toyota Fortuner at the Arab American Vehicles (AAV) plant. That operates as a contract assembler. Production of the Fortuner started on Egyptian soil back in 2012. Since then it has remained the sole passenger vehicle in Toyota's local lineup.

One single model represents the entire local passenger car assembly program. That's a thin base for a market with Egypt's ambitions, which explains the intense interest surrounding every round of talks about expanding it further.

Urban Cruiser Enters the Spotlight

Industry reports are now pointing to the Toyota Urban Cruiser as the leading candidate to join the local assembly roster. This compact crossover is currently imported fully-built from Toyota's factories in India, making it a logical candidate for localization in a market where import costs drive up final prices significantly.

Yet a formal decision has not been announced. The reports circulating about the Urban Cruiser fall squarely within the realm of ongoing discussions, not settled plans. It would be far more accurate to describe this as a potential option under evaluation rather than a final production decision.
