Minister of Industry: No Restrictions on Car Imports, Market Regulation Aimed at Balancing Competition

State Strategy for Automotive Sector Development

Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, affirmed that the state's strategy for developing the automotive sector is based on regulating the market and enhancing its efficiency without compromising the principles of a free economy. He emphasized that the primary goal is to improve the quality of services provided to citizens and achieve a fair balance between manufacturers and importers in the Egyptian market.

Automotive Industry as an Integrated Production System

During a panel discussion at a major transport exhibition, the Minister of Industry explained that the automotive industry is a heavy and complex sector. It relies heavily on intertwined supply chains, supporting industries, and advanced logistics services. He stressed that it cannot be treated merely as an import activity, but must be viewed as a comprehensive production system.

New Measures to Regulate Importers and Enhance After-Sales Services

In this context, the Minister pointed out that the ministry is currently studying a package of new regulatory measures. These include verifying the financial solvency of importers and ensuring they own certified maintenance centers capable of providing genuine services to consumers. This move aims to eliminate inactive entities, protect consumers, and guarantee the availability of after-sales services and spare parts throughout the vehicle's lifespan.

Market Filtering and Combating Counterfeit Spare Parts

He added that these measures are part of a broader plan to filter the market through regular supervisory campaigns executed by specialized authorities. These campaigns aim to ensure the quality of spare parts, verify service compliance, and crack down on unbranded products that threaten safety and disrupt the organized industry.

Regulating Imports to Promote Fair Competition and Local Manufacturing

Hashem confirmed that the state is not moving towards imposing restrictions on car imports. Instead, the focus is on organizing the import process to ensure fair competition and provide consumers with multiple options. He noted that the working philosophy supports the free economy and stimulates price and quality competitiveness among all parties. Furthermore, he highlighted that the automotive sector is a priority in the development strategy up to 2030, aiming to boost local manufacturing, increase the local component ratio, and develop supporting industries to deepen local value chains.
