Hisham Hosny: Don't Buy Looks Alone — European Cars Win on After-Sales and Parts Availability
Hisham Hosny, CEO of Stellantis Egypt, said after-sales service, spare parts availability, and maintenance costs are now decisive factors in car buying, especially as models converge on specs and price. He noted that some Chinese cars sell well but face parts availability challenges compared with European brands. His remarks carry a direct message to buyers: calculate the real cost of ownership before signing.
Hisham Hosny, CEO of Stellantis Egypt, has warned buyers against choosing a car based on looks alone, stressing that after-sales service, parts availability, and maintenance costs are now decisive factors. His remarks came during a television interview, where he drew a direct comparison between European and Chinese brands in the Egyptian market.
Why Peugeot and Citroen hold the upper hand in after-sales
Hosny said Stellantis Egypt supplies spare parts for the various European brands operating under its umbrella, noting that parts availability is a key factor for customers, alongside maintenance costs and the services provided. The point is simple. The sticker price doesn't reflect the real cost of ownership over time. That cost shows up in the workshop.
According to Hosny, some Chinese cars may sell in high volumes but still face challenges related to spare parts availability, compared with European cars, which makes after-sales service and the availability of maintenance essentials a key factor in customer preferences. The comparison puts Chery and BYD under real scrutiny in Egypt, where competitive pricing alone is no longer enough to win long-term buyer trust.
The European equation: parts on the shelf or just promises?
For Stellantis, the European promise of available parts isn't a marketing slogan. The company's Egyptian portfolio spans Opel and Fiat alongside Peugeot and Citroen, meaning it manages multiple supply chains. That is a serious logistical challenge in a market defined by import fluctuations. Holding the line on pricing is the harder part.
The statement lands as Egypt's market sees fierce competition between European and Chinese models in the mid-price segment, with buyers hunting for the best value for their money. Hosny argues that real value isn't measured by spec sheets alone, but by what the company delivers after the sale. Smart buyers do the math before signing.
What it means for Egyptian buyers
The practical message is clear: calculate maintenance and parts costs before you decide, not after. A cheap car with scarce parts can become a bigger financial burden than a pricier model backed by a strong service network. The difference surfaces after year one.
Ultimately, the market and real customer experience will settle the debate, whether the brand is European like Peugeot or Chinese like Chery. But Hosny's warning puts after-sales service at the center of the buying equation, not on its margins. The equation has changed.
