Failure to Renew Vehicle Registration Can Lead to Immediate Administrative Seizure Under Traffic Law
Some vehicle and motorcycle owners may assume that delaying the renewal of a registration is a minor violation that can be postponed. However, the Traffic Law provides for immediate administrative measures that can begin with the seizure of the vehicle, in addition to financial obligations that continue to increase for as long as the registration remains expired. Maintaining a valid registration is a fundamental legal requirement for operating a vehicle on public roads, making timely renewal essential.
When is a Vehicle Administratively Seized?
According to Article 54, Paragraph One of the Traffic Law, a vehicle is subject to administrative seizure if it is driven on the road without a valid registration or if its registration period has expired without renewal. In such cases, the vehicle is prohibited from continuing on the road until its legal status is corrected and all required dues have been paid, ensuring compliance with the legal framework governing vehicle licensing.
Financial Obligations Under the Law
The same article states that the full annual tax becomes payable on the violating vehicle. The tax is calculated from the date of purchase, the date the vehicle entered the country, or the day following the expiration of the previous tax period, depending on the applicable case. In addition, an extra tax equal to one-third of the annual tax is imposed for the period during which the registration has expired, with a maximum limit of five years for both the original tax and the additional tax, increasing the total financial burden as the delay continues.
Continuous Traffic Enforcement
The General Traffic Department continues to monitor roads and major routes through an advanced enforcement system that includes fixed and mobile smart radar units alongside the field deployment of traffic officers. These measures are intended to detect and seize violating vehicles in accordance with the law, strengthen compliance with traffic regulations, and enhance road safety for all users.
