The Egyptian Motor Insurance Pool (EMIP) has announced the initiation of procedures to disburse due compensation to the victims and injured of the Ring Road accident in the Al-Salam district, which occurred early Wednesday morning, resulting in 3 fatalities, 16 injuries, and the destruction of over 23 vehicles. The Pool confirmed it is monitoring the accident's developments minute by minute and coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure compensation reaches its beneficiaries as quickly as possible.

Accident Details and Causes

In an official statement, the Pool detailed that it tracked the repercussions of the accident, which took place near the Al-Salam tunnel after a heavy truck (trailer) loaded with construction materials collided with several vehicles. This triggered a chain of successive collisions that extended to the BRT (bus rapid transit) lane near the Adly Mansour station, the vicinity of Cairo International Airport, and the Al-Salam bus terminal. Preliminary inspections indicated that excessive speed, loss of steering control by the truck driver, and failure to maintain safe distances between vehicles were among the primary causes that exacerbated the accident and widened the scope of its human and material losses.

Impact on Traffic Flow

The Pool confirmed that the accident disrupted traffic flow on one of the most vital arteries in Greater Cairo, also affecting the regularity of BRT services and public transport. Furthermore, the accident hindered the movement of travelers and commutes to and from Cairo International Airport and neighboring cities such as Al-Obour and 10th of Ramadan. The Pool noted that such accidents highlight the significant risks associated with heavy transport vehicles when prescribed speeds and safety rules are not followed, stressing that human error remains one of the main causes of serious traffic accidents.

Rising Phenomenon of Chain-Reaction Accidents

The Pool drew attention to the increase in what are known as 'chain-reaction accidents' in recent times. These are accidents that begin with an initial collision, followed by other speeding vehicles crashing into the cars stopped at the accident site. The Pool emphasized that this phenomenon leads to multiplied losses in lives and property, noting that the recent accident is a stark example of this type of crash, which requires greater awareness from drivers.

Compensation Procedures and Ongoing Investigations

The Pool confirmed that it has begun taking necessary steps to verify the insurance coverage of the vehicles involved in the accident, in preparation for starting the disbursement of compensation for deaths and injuries as soon as the required documents are completed and the investigations, legal registration, and description of the accident by the Public Prosecution are finalized. It clarified that its responsibility is limited to compensation for deaths and human injuries resulting from car accidents according to the compulsory insurance policy, while compensation for material damage to vehicles falls within the scope of optional supplementary insurance policies.
