Head of Egyptian Car Dealers Association Expects Price Hikes of Up to 10%
Osama Aboul Magd, head of the Egyptian Car Dealers Association, expects car prices to rise by up to 10% in the coming period. The forecast follows a wave of price increases that hit more than 25 models from various brands, including Chinese and Korean vehicles. The causes stem from exchange rate movements, rising shipping and insurance costs due to regional tensions, and import restrictions. Fully imported vehicles will be most affected, while locally assembled cars will see relatively less severe increases.
More than 25 models from various brands have raised prices in the Egyptian market over the past few days, including Chinese and Korean vehicles, in a new wave hitting sedans and SUVs. Expectations point to an additional increase of up to 10%. Osama Aboul Magd, head of the Egyptian Car Dealers Association, said the rise isn't surprising given regional developments and their impact on import and shipping costs.
The Dollar and Imported Components: The Primary Factor
Exchange rate movements directly affect the cost of imported vehicles, as well as locally assembled cars that rely on imported components. Aboul Magd explained that a large percentage of components in locally manufactured cars come from abroad, making production costs tied to currency fluctuations. This link pushes companies to reprice their models as currency procurement costs rise. Hyundai prices have seen notable movement recently, along with many other models.
Wars Drive Up Shipping and Insurance Costs
International shipping and insurance costs add another burden on car prices, especially with regional tensions that may affect cargo routes and transit costs. Aboul Magd noted that rising maritime transport risks reflect on the cost of shipping vehicles and components, along with increased insurance premiums on shipments heading to various markets. The severity of this impact varies from one company to another based on country of origin, shipping routes. The nature of contracts signed with transport and insurance firms. Kia is among the brands affected by these costs due to its reliance on imports.
Import Restrictions Pressure the Market
Restrictions imposed on imports represent an additional factor affecting the flow of vehicles into the Egyptian market, under procedures regulating the import process. These restrictions limit supply and increase pressure on prices. Kia prices and Chery prices reflect part of this pressure, with models like the Chery Tiggo 8 seeing repeated price movements.
What Does This Mean for Buyers?
The expected increase of up to 10% means a car priced at EGP 1.2 million could reach EGP 1.32 million. Buyers waiting for prices to drop may find themselves facing further increases. Hyundai and Chery are among the brands likely to reprice their models in the coming period, along with other Korean and Chinese brands.
Fully imported vehicles will be the most affected, while locally assembled cars will see relatively less severe increases but remain tied to imported component costs. Hyundai prices and Toyota will serve as indicators of market direction in the coming weeks, as import and shipping cost pressures persist.
