Chaos in Egypt's Used Car Market: Uncontrolled Pricing Deepens Recession in 2026
Egypt's used car market experienced severe pricing chaos during the first half of 2026, as the absence of clear vehicle valuation standards prolonged a state of recession despite high demand from citizens seeking affordable alternatives to new cars. This crisis has not only confused buyers but also significantly eroded consumer confidence in the market as a whole.
Lack of Pricing Reference and Its Market Impact
Automotive experts revealed that price exaggeration and leaving vehicle valuation to the seller's personal discretion have notably weakened buying and selling activity. Experts explained that the used car market still lacks an official pricing reference or accredited evaluation centers, forcing many sellers to rely on personal estimates that do not reflect the car's actual value. Consequently, similar vehicles of the same model, condition, and specifications appear at vastly different prices without logical justification, leaving buyers confused and hesitant.
Purchase Delays Due to Random Pricing
Fadel Mahmoud, an experienced car dealer, confirmed that continued random pricing was a key factor behind weak sales throughout the first half of 2026. He noted that many buyers preferred to postpone their purchase decisions, waiting for prices to drop to more realistic levels. Meanwhile, numerous cars remained listed for sale over long periods without finding buyers, deepening the crisis and worsening the recession in the used car market.
Mahmoud added that some sellers still determine their car prices based on personal mood or advertised prices that do not match actual transactions taking place in the market. This behavior has widened the gap between the asking price and the car's real value, making negotiations difficult and frustrating many potential buyers.
Declining Consumer Confidence and Lack of Transparency
The dealer emphasized that the lack of transparency in transactions, along with the spread of negative practices such as hiding technical defects or exaggerating a car's condition, has increased buyers' anxiety. Many now resort to delaying purchases or searching for long periods before making a final decision, weakening market dynamics and limiting recovery opportunities.
The Need for Fair Pricing to Revive the Market
Fadel Mahmoud stressed the importance of relying on accurate technical evaluation before determining any car's price, comparing prices from multiple sources, and not being swayed by inflated prices or attractive advertisements. He affirmed that restoring activity in the used car market will only be achieved through fair pricing that reflects the car's true condition, thereby rebuilding trust between sellers and buyers and revitalizing the market.
