Egypt's Car Market: 'Over-Price' Premiums Return as Supply Tightens
The over-price premium has returned to Egypt's car market after months of stability, according to Ashraf Sharbas, head of the Automotive Division at the Giza Chamber of Commerce. He attributed the comeback to shrinking dealer inventory after agents cut quotas amid import problems, plus higher shipping, insurance and raw material costs. Around 28 models saw official price increases of 5,000 to 150,000 Egyptian pounds in recent days. Sharbas expects cars priced between EGP 1 million and EGP 2 million to be the most affected.
The over-price premium is back in Egypt's car market after months of stability, and Ashraf Sharbas, head of the Automotive Division at the Giza Chamber of Commerce, points to shrinking inventory as the direct cause. The numbers are telling. Around 28 models saw official price increases in recent days, ranging from 5,000 to 150,000 Egyptian pounds, a clear signal that pricing pressure has not eased.
Why Chery and Changan Are Back to Unofficial Premiums
Sharbas said in press remarks that several agents recently cut dealer quotas because of import problems, leaving showrooms short on supply. But that isn't the whole story. Instability across the Middle East pushed up shipping and insurance costs and raised prices of raw materials used in car manufacturing, factors he said contributed to higher official prices and the return of unofficial premiums in the parallel market. The equation is simple.
Supply and Demand Rule Hyundai and Nissan
The division head explained that the over-price premium's return or disappearance depends on supply and demand. Whenever supply drops, unofficial increases for immediate delivery come back, while the phenomenon fades when supply rises and dealers have more models in stock. Brands including Chery, Changan, MG, Hyundai, Nissan and Skoda announced official price hikes on some models, adding pressure on the mid-range segment.
The Hardest-Hit Segment: EGP 1M to EGP 2M
Sharbas expects cars priced between one million and two million Egyptian pounds to be the most affected by the return of the over-price premium. This is the highest-demand tier in the Egyptian market, so any supply shortfall pushes dealers to impose unofficial increases for immediate delivery. The market is moving. Prices for Hyundai and Nissan in the parallel market remain a gauge of the pressure buyers face.
What It Means for Buyers
In the short term, prices won't fall. Sharbas links the premium's return to weaker supply, which suggests it will persist in high-demand segments until import flows improve and dealer quotas normalize. Traders prefer immediate delivery with an unofficial premium over waiting. The buyer pays the difference. Anyone watching the Chery and Skoda market can see official and unofficial increases moving in the same direction.
