Chinese automakers look to turn Egypt into a manufacturing and export hub

Khaled Saad, Secretary General of the Egyptian Automotive Manufacturers Association, revealed that several Chinese companies are now eyeing Egypt as a regional platform for manufacturing and export rather than just another market for imported vehicles. The message is clear: Egypt's industrial potential is finally being taken seriously on the global automotive map.

Why Egypt is the perfect launchpad

Geography gives Egypt a decisive edge here. During his appearance on 'Arabity' program on Radio Masr, Saad explained that Chinese manufacturers are considering direct factory investments or strategic partnerships with existing Egyptian plants like Chery. Local production would feed domestic demand while opening export corridors to African and Middle Eastern markets. Trade agreements signed between Cairo and regional partners already grant locally manufactured goods preferential access, strengthening the economic case for large-scale industrial projects.

Numbers alone can't capture what is shifting here. The transformation goes well beyond simple vehicle assembly, touching deep into the local supply chain. From electrical components to suspension systems and braking hardware, Egypt stands to build genuine industrial depth that creates real added value within the domestic economy.

Saad stressed that these investments would revitalize existing factories, boost production capacity utilization. Generate strong demand for skilled technical and engineering labor. Egyptian-Chinese economic relations have accelerated noticeably in recent months. President Xi Jinping's latest visit to Cairo produced over 20 signed cooperation documents spanning economic, technological, financial, transportation and other critical fields. These agreements feed directly into the automotive sector, opening fresh opportunities for brands like Geely and other Chinese marques seeking regional expansion through the Egyptian gateway.

Industry observers view this as a strategic shift in how China approaches overseas manufacturing. Instead of merely exporting fully-built vehicles to Egypt, Chinese automakers now aim to localize production itself on Egyptian soil — through joint ventures with local investors and climbing localization ratios year after year. Egypt's legacy automotive industry desperately needs such injection. The Chinese partner appears best positioned to deliver it.
