The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that American exports of vehicles and automotive parts to Egypt have exceeded $256 million, following the Egyptian government's decision to adopt the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). This announcement came during an official visit by U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis, Stephen Heins, to the General Motors Egypt plant in 6th of October City, where the adoption of these standards was confirmed, expanding the options available to consumers in the local market.

Official Visit to GM Egypt Plant

Rohan Fernandez, Chairman and incoming CEO of GM Egypt and Africa, hosted the announcement ceremony in the presence of senior officials, including Robert Silverman, Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, and Mohamed Farid Saleh, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade. The ceremony followed an inspection tour of the manufacturing operations inside the plant, one of the leading assembly facilities in the Middle East and Africa region.

Expanding Choices and Boosting Competition

Rohan Fernandez commented: 'General Motors Egypt welcomes the agreement reached with the Egyptian government to adopt the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This step is a milestone for the Egyptian automotive sector and a positive move toward a more open and transparent market for U.S.-built vehicles and parts.' He emphasized that this aligns with GM's 100-year commitment to the Middle East and Africa, which began in Egypt, to support the growth and development of the automotive industry.

Fernandez added: 'For General Motors Egypt, this step provides a more efficient and clearer regulatory framework for accessing the Egyptian market, which has already contributed to the return of the Cadillac brand to Egypt last May.' He noted that these regulatory developments can translate into tangible economic and commercial results by expanding choices for Egyptian consumers, enhancing fair competition among global companies, and solidifying Egypt's position as a strategic and promising market for the automotive industry.
