Nissan Expands U.S. Production and Launches New Rogue Hybrid to Boost Sales
Nissan Motor is increasing its U.S. production capacity alongside the launch of the 2027 Rogue crossover, including a new hybrid variant. The automaker aims to raise annual output from 487,000 units to nearly 1 million by adding a third shift. Nissan also plans to import hybrids from Japan temporarily to speed up their U.S. market launch. By 2030, it targets building 80% of its U.S. sales locally without new plant construction.
Nissan Motor is set to increase its production capacity in the United States alongside the launch of the all-new 2027 Rogue crossover, including a new hybrid variant that the company considers a pivotal product for American consumers. The move comes as Nissan aims to lift its U.S. output to nearly 1 million units annually by adding a third shift at its assembly plants. Currently, the automaker produces around 487,000 units per year in the U.S.
Nissan Boosts U.S. Output with 2027 Rogue Launch
487,000 units. That's Nissan's current U.S. production volume, but the automaker is targeting 1 million units annually if it can shift its assembly lines to three shifts instead of two. Cristian Monnier, Nissan's chairman for the Americas, told CNBC: "We are currently running at maximum capacity in the U.S. The next step will be moving to a three-shift system, and I am very optimistic that with the launch of the new Rogue in the coming months, we will achieve that very quickly, along with the hybrid version." The Smyrna, Tennessee plant—spanning 6 million square feet—builds the Rogue along with other crossovers from Nissan and Infiniti, while the Canton, Mississippi facility handles the Altima sedan and Frontier midsize pickup.
Local Production Strategy: 80% of U.S. Sales Built Domestically by 2030
Nissan's ambition goes beyond raw numbers. The company aims to build 80% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. domestically by 2030, though it has no plans for a new plant at this time. Smyrna and Canton will be the backbone of this strategy, focusing on expanding existing lines rather than investing in new facilities. The push comes as the Trump administration focuses on boosting domestic hiring and manufacturing in the U.S. auto sector, giving Nissan a potential competitive edge.
Rogue Hybrid: Will Local Production Start Next Year?
Local manufacturing of the Rogue hybrid is expected to begin in the U.S. next year, following the spring launch of the 2027 Rogue with a conventional gasoline engine at the Tennessee plant. But Nissan isn't waiting. Monnier noted that the company plans to import hybrids from Japan temporarily to accelerate their market launch, aiming to boost sales and support its global recovery plan. This dual strategy—local manufacturing and imports simultaneously—gives Nissan greater flexibility in responding to rising demand for hybrid models.
New Jobs Expected at Nissan's U.S. Plants
Adding shifts at assembly plants typically creates hundreds, possibly thousands, of new jobs. Nissan's Smyrna and Canton facilities will be at the center of this expansion, reinforcing the company's position as a major employer in the U.S. auto industry. With the 2027 Rogue and hybrid variant hitting the market, Nissan expects a notable surge in domestic demand, which could accelerate hiring in the coming months.
How Will Nissan's Expansion Impact the Global Auto Market?
Nissan's decision to ramp up U.S. production could have ripple effects beyond American shores. The Japanese automaker is looking to reduce reliance on imports and mitigate potential tariffs, while sharpening its competitive edge against domestic rivals like Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota. Increased local production could help Nissan cut costs and offer more competitive pricing, positively impacting its market share. Yet the biggest challenge remains whether the company can execute its plans within the announced timeline, especially amid global supply chain volatility.
