General Motors Welcomes Adoption of US Vehicle Safety Standards in Egypt
General Motors Egypt has officially welcomed the Egyptian government's decision to adopt the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), announced during a high-level official visit to the company's factory in 6th of October City. The move aims to expand the choices available to consumers in the local market, covering both vehicles and spare parts manufactured in the United States.
High-Level Visit to 6th of October Factory
Rohan Fernando, Chairman and incoming Managing Director of General Motors Egypt and Africa, hosted the official announcement ceremony, attended by Steven Heinz, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis, and Robert Silverman, Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. The event also included Engineer Khaled Hashim, Minister of Industry, and Mohamed Farid Saleh, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, following an inspection tour of the manufacturing operations inside the facility.
Expanding Choices and Enhancing Competition
Fernando stated during the event: 'General Motors Egypt welcomes the agreement reached with the Egyptian government to adopt the FMVSS. This step represents a significant milestone for the Egyptian automotive sector and a positive move toward a more open and transparent market for vehicles and spare parts manufactured in the United States.' He emphasized that this decision aligns with General Motors' 100-year commitment in the Middle East and Africa, which started from Egypt, to support the growth and development of the automotive industry.
Cadillac Returns to the Egyptian Market
Fernando added that this step provides a more efficient and clear regulatory framework for accessing the Egyptian market, noting that it has already contributed to the return of the Cadillac brand to Egypt last May. He affirmed that regulatory developments can translate into tangible economic and commercial outcomes by expanding consumer choices in Egypt, promoting fair competition among global companies, and strengthening Egypt's position as an attractive investment destination in the automotive sector.
It is worth noting that adopting the FMVSS represents a qualitative shift in Egypt's automotive regulatory environment, as it facilitates the import of U.S.-manufactured vehicles and spare parts, giving Egyptian consumers broader and more diverse options. This decision is expected to stimulate competition among agents and global brands in the local market, positively impacting prices, quality, and services offered to customers.
