European Cars in Egypt Maintain Market Share Despite Chinese Dominance
European automotive brands have successfully maintained their market share in the Egyptian passenger car market at 13.5% during the first four months of this year, despite fierce competition from Chinese cars, which have captured over 40% of total sales in the same period.
Notable Growth in European Car Sales
According to the report from the Automotive Market Information Council (AMIC), European car sales grew by 47.5% between January and April this year, reaching 6,707 units compared to 4,547 units during the corresponding period last year. This growth reflects the ability of dealers to sustain their presence in the market despite intensifying competition from Chinese brands that have captured a significant share of demand.
Dealer Strategies to Maintain Presence
Montaser Zeitoun, a member of the General Automotive Division at the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce, explained that European brands managed to retain their market share by continuing to launch new models across various price segments, while also ensuring adequate vehicle availability in dealer showrooms. This approach has helped meet a substantial portion of accumulated consumer orders.
Zeitoun added that consistent supply has led to price stability for most European cars, with the phenomenon of overpricing disappearing from most models, except for very limited cases linked to high-demand variants or restricted production. This indicates a notable improvement in market balance compared to previous periods that experienced price volatility.
Pricing Adjustments to Counter Chinese Competition
In recent months, European car dealers have moved to reprice several models by reducing profit margins, aiming to enhance competitiveness against Chinese brands that have captured the largest share of market sales. Zeitoun noted that competition is no longer solely price-based but now encompasses product quality, after-sales services, and vehicle resale value, prompting dealers to improve their offerings.
It is worth mentioning that nearly 17 European brands are currently present in the local market, including established names such as Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Peugeot, Renault, Citroen, Opel, and Audi, which continue to offer diverse options to Egyptian consumers despite the growing dominance of Chinese brands.
