Egypt-China Partnership Moves EV Manufacturing Closer to Home
A new chapter in Egypt's automotive industry is taking shape. Cairo and Beijing have agreed to expand their partnership, focusing on localizing the production of electric vehicles, batteries, and automotive components — a move designed to strengthen domestic manufacturing and position Egypt as a regional production and export hub.
The discussions brought together Egypt's Minister of Industry, Engineer Khaled Hashem, and China's Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Xiong Ji Jie, on the sidelines of the BRICS industry ministers meeting in Jaipur, India. Ambassador Kamal Galal, Egypt's ambassador to India, and Dr. Ahmed Maghawry, Assistant Minister for International Cooperation, also attended the talks.
Electric Ambitions Take Center Stage
The minister made the priorities clear. The automotive sector stands as one of the most prominent cooperation areas between the two countries, with Chinese companies already serving as key partners in several strategic industries inside Egypt — from electronics to textiles, food, and pharmaceuticals. These partnerships have facilitated technology transfer, boosted production capacities, and created new job opportunities.
Egypt's government places electric vehicle manufacturing, batteries, and car components at the top of its cooperation agenda with China, alongside buses, machinery, industrial robots, and heavy equipment. Ongoing discussions with several Chinese companies aim to establish local manufacturing projects, increase the percentage of Egyptian components, and transfer technical expertise and technology.
A Gateway to African Markets
The new projects target meeting local market demand first. But the larger ambition lies in leveraging Egypt's strategic location to export vehicles and components to Middle Eastern and African markets — a key factor in enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian industry.
The meeting also explored cooperation opportunities in establishing specialized industrial zones and complexes, building on the successes achieved by joint projects between the two countries, while working to launch new industrial initiatives in the coming period.
The Chinese side responded in kind. Vice Minister Xiong Ji Jie affirmed Beijing's support for expanding its companies' investments in the Egyptian market, particularly in electric vehicles, batteries, robotics, and machinery. The Chinese government will encourage these companies to explore available investment opportunities in Egypt, while continuing coordination to overcome any challenges facing investors.
The Chinese official concluded the meeting by extending an official invitation to the Minister of Industry to visit Beijing, tour modern manufacturing complexes, and continue exploring broader horizons for industrial cooperation between the two nations.
