Giant Factories and Job Opportunities: PM Inspects Alstom Complex in Borg El Arab to Boost Localization and Exports
Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly inspected the Alstom industrial complex in Borg El Arab New City, Alexandria Governorate, one of the largest projects aimed at localizing railway and electric transport manufacturing in Egypt. The tour was held in the presence of Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the industrial sector is a cornerstone for achieving sustainable economic growth, noting the state's continued support for national industry by boosting production, deepening local manufacturing, and expanding exports, alongside attracting more investments and creating job opportunities for youth.
For his part, Minister Kamel El-Wazir stressed that the project is a pivotal step in implementing the state's plan to localize railway and metro industries, in line with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives. He explained that the complex will help meet local market needs and export to Middle Eastern and African markets, while also providing foreign currency and transferring modern technology and expertise to Egyptian workers.
The Minister outlined the railway localization plan in Egypt, which includes producing switch crossings at the Voestalpine Egypt factory in Abbassia, manufacturing interior train components at the Coloway Egypt plant in Kom Abu Radi workshops, and producing rails at the Suez Steel factory. The plan also covers localizing concrete sleeper production through six factories of a national Egyptian company, manufacturing railway cars at SEMAF, brake pads at TransBrak, and producing rolling stock and components through the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC).
During the tour, the Prime Minister heard a presentation from Engineer Rami Salah El-Din, Managing Director of Alstom Egypt, who explained that the complex includes two main factories. The first is dedicated to producing electrical systems on a 13-feddan area, providing about 700 direct job opportunities, with 25% completion rate and scheduled for completion by the end of October 2026. The second factory, spanning 37 feddans, specializes in manufacturing various rolling stock, including metro, tram, light rail transit (LRT), monorail, and high-speed trains, providing about 250 direct job opportunities.
At the conclusion of the tour, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of accelerating work to meet set deadlines, in order to maximize economic returns and strengthen Egypt's position as a regional hub for railway and electric transport manufacturing.
