Afreximbank has committed a $1 billion fund to support Africa's automotive sector, with $233 million already disbursed and 10 investment opportunities worth $125 million identified in auto components manufacturing. The announcement came during the African Automotive Investment Forum held in El Alamein.

Fund Details and Disbursements

The fund is designed to strengthen regional value chains and localize auto parts production across the continent. The identified opportunities cover manufacturing of braking systems, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, tires, batteries, and their housings. This move comes as African nations seek to reduce reliance on imported vehicles and components.

Dr. Gainmore Zanamwe, Director of Trade Facilitation and Investment Promotion at the bank, said developing Africa's auto industry requires stronger collaboration between governments, manufacturers, and financial institutions to turn investment opportunities into sustainable, bankable projects. He added that the bank continues to support these efforts through financing and partnership building that enhance local production and develop regional supply chains.

GM Egypt Plant Visit

On the sidelines of the forum, participants visited the General Motors Egypt and Africa plant in 6th of October City to learn about Egypt's manufacturing capabilities and opportunities for regional cooperation. The visit signaled Egypt's potential role in Afreximbank's industrialization plan, given its existing manufacturing infrastructure and accumulated expertise at companies like Chevrolet in the local market.

The forum was held under the theme 'Unlocking Africa's Automotive Potential under the AfCFTA,' with participants discussing legislative reforms, investment incentives, financing mechanisms, joint ventures, and technology transfer. Attendees included officials, policymakers, manufacturers, suppliers, investors, and financial institutions, alongside the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers and the AfCFTA Secretariat.

Regional Context and Impact on Egypt

The number reflects serious ambition. The $1 billion fund could reshape the continent's manufacturing map if translated into actual projects, but the challenge remains in execution speed and attracting global companies like Chevrolet pricing to invest in local supply chains. Egypt's market stands to benefit if battery and component manufacturing projects expand, potentially improving parts availability and prices of locally assembled vehicles.

According to the bank, financing tools extend beyond loans to include project preparation, guarantees, and equity participation—a package aimed at reducing risks facing investors in Africa's auto sector. The step comes as countries like Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa push to deepen local manufacturing and export vehicles and components to continental markets.
