Mercedes-Benz C180 Avantgarde (2022-2027) Review

Engine & Performance

The C180 shares the same 1.5-litre turbocharged engine as the C200 but in a detuned state, producing roughly 34 hp and 50 Nm less. It still delivers up to 250 Nm of torque from as low as 1,800 rpm, giving it a reasonably lively feel despite a 0-100 km/h time that is about 1.3 seconds slower than the C200. All current C-Class variants use mild-hybrid assistance, paired with a Mercedes-developed 9-speed automatic gearbox that handles everyday driving smoothly, though it can hesitate slightly under more demanding acceleration requests.

Interior & Cabin Space

The Avantgarde trim features comfort Artico synthetic-leather seats and a leather-wrapped dashboard that give the cabin a genuinely premium feel, rivaling the genuine leather found in the C200. Nothing about the interior or exterior styling signals a base-spec car, with standard LED head and tail lights and smart-looking factory wheels. Interior space is notably generous for the class, feeling closer to an E-Class than a traditional C-Class.

Ride, Handling & Braking

The C180 leans toward a relaxed, comfort-focused driving character rather than a sporty one, with steering tuned for easy, leisurely driving. The suspension is firmer at low speeds but becomes well-damped and composed at higher speeds. Brake pedal feel can seem slightly over-assisted due to the mild-hybrid system, though this also makes the automatic engine start-stop function unusually smooth and easy to forget about.

Technology & Trim Trade-offs

Compared with the C200, the C180 lacks built-in MBUX navigation, though Apple CarPlay and Android Auto largely make up for this, along with the absence of a 360-degree camera, which is arguably unnecessary on a car this size. Compared with the AMG Line trim specifically, buyers miss out on 18-inch wheels, metal-weave trim, sport seats, AMG styling cues, a sportier exhaust note, and upgraded brakes and steering wheel — trade-offs that are easy to live with at this price point, apart from the stronger brakes.
