BMW X7 (2019-2022) Review

Engine & Performance

The X7 launched under the M50i badge with a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 producing 530 hp and 750 Nm of peak torque between 1,800 and 4,600 rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system with an M Sport differential. Powered by permanent all-wheel drive, the car accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and reaches a 250 km/h top speed, averaging 10.9L/100km fuel consumption. Consumption is relatively high due to the large engine, substantial weight, and high performance, but it is considered acceptable for this class of vehicle, with a powerful engine and smooth-shifting transmission delivering very good performance despite the car's large size, weight, and three-row layout.

Interior & Cabin Space

The car measures 5,151 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, and 1,805 mm tall on a 3,105 mm wheelbase, seating 7 adults across three rows, with a 326-liter trunk expanding to 750 liters by folding the third row and up to 2,120 liters with both the second and third rows folded. Interior space is generous and seating comfortable across all rows, including the third row, which offers full comfort with no cramping in seat size, armrests, or cup holders, plus USB ports. The second row comes standard as a three-seat bench or optionally as two individual seats, with all seats power-adjustable at the push of a button. Luxury features include a 12.3-inch touchscreen, five-zone climate control, standard Vernasca leather upholstery, a three-panel panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting including an illuminated welcome carpet, a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, and a professional rear-seat entertainment system. On the technology side, the car offers a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems including active cruise control with Stop & Go, plus a professional driving assistant package featuring steering assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, an emergency assist function, and automated parking and reverse assist, along with notably good interior sound insulation.

Maintenance & Resale

Spare parts are reasonably available through the dealer, but availability outside the dealer network is very limited given the car's low sales volume, compounded by significantly high parts prices and difficulty servicing it outside the official network. Resale is limited in Egypt, partly due to the car's unusually large size for a luxury model of this kind, and its high price, which limits how widely it spread and, in turn, its availability in the used-car market. This version of the X7 also had a relatively short run: it launched in 2019, and its Egyptian distributor later faced numerous difficulties and paused its operations for an extended period.

Suspension & Stability

Carefully tuned chassis systems enhance comfort, agility, and off-road performance, particularly with an adaptive suspension featuring electronically controlled dampers adjustable at the push of a button, alongside active steering and dedicated drive modes for sand, rocks, and snow. The car rides on an adaptive sport air suspension that delivers a high level of ride comfort for the driver and passengers across all seating rows.

Safety

The X7 comes with a wide range of safety systems including ABS brakes, front and side airbags plus curtain airbags, front and rear LED fog lights, a rear camera, central locking, blind-spot warning with an alert, electronic stability control (ESP), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), front and rear LED lights with light-sensing headlights, lane-monitoring, hill-descent assist, automated parking assistance, M Sport brakes, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

Equipment

Exterior equipment includes optional 20- to 22-inch sport wheels, BMW Laserlight headlights with a range of up to 600 meters, various chrome accents, M Performance styling with an exterior M package for improved aerodynamics, an M Sport exhaust system, aluminum exterior trim, and welcome lights. Inside, the car features a 12.3-inch iDrive touchscreen with 32GB of storage and navigation, a 7-inch control tablet, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, four- or five-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof or full panoramic roof, a head-up display, a multi-function steering wheel, parking sensors and a rear camera, cruise control, and an engine start/stop button. Additional equipment includes power Comfort seats for the driver and front passenger trimmed in luxurious Vernasca leather, dual 10-inch screens for middle-row passengers, a 464-watt, 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with a subwoofer, a CD/MP3 player, AUX, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity, a smart key with a display, smart voice control, wood and metal interior trim, an M Sport leather steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, powered rear sunshades, a 360-degree camera, Alcantara headliner, a smart entry system, soft-close doors, and heat- and sound-insulating glass.
