The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) has issued a stark warning about the future of the sector, emphasizing the urgent need for additional reforms, including cost-cutting measures and workforce reductions. This comes amid growing debate over austerity plans that could reshape one of Germany's most vital industries.

VDA President: Companies Must Redesign Their Business Models

Hildegard Müller, President of the VDA, stated that automakers are facing persistent and severe challenges at their production sites, necessitating further reforms and adjustments. She stressed that companies bear the responsibility of securing their competitiveness by decisively redesigning their business models, which includes cost adjustments and, unfortunately, necessary workforce modifications and radical changes to business structures.

Müller acknowledged that these decisions are difficult and must be implemented through dialogue with all stakeholders. She warned that denying the need for action, whether fully or partially, and refusing to acknowledge the obvious facts, is not an option. According to her, such behavior is short-sighted and socially irresponsible due to its repercussions.

Employment Under Threat as Political Goals Fall Behind Reality

Regarding jobs in the sector, Müller stated that reality has overtaken political goals and directions, increasingly threatening employment opportunities. She noted that maintaining factories belonging to manufacturers and suppliers is no longer possible under current conditions. Müller called for opening production sites to foreign manufacturers, arguing that every factory preserved means preserving jobs.

Volkswagen at the Epicenter: 100,000 Job Cuts and Plant Closures

Tensions are escalating at Volkswagen, with the IG Metall union calling for a nationwide day of action across all company sites. This coincides with the supervisory board meeting to discuss potential workforce reduction measures. According to Manager Magazin, Volkswagen plans to significantly tighten its austerity program, potentially eliminating up to 100,000 jobs worldwide — double the previously planned number.

Four of the group's plants in Germany face the risk of closure: Hanover, Emden, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm. Der Spiegel reported that car production at these facilities could cease by the end of 2034, amplifying concerns about the future of the German industrial landscape.

Mercedes-Benz Workers Join Protests

Protests have not been limited to Volkswagen; tens of thousands of workers at Mercedes-Benz also demonstrated across Germany last Friday, protesting the company's plans to tighten its austerity program. These labor movements reflect the growing unrest in a sector caught between the imperative to cut costs and the need to preserve jobs in one of Germany's most crucial industries.
