Classic Cadillac Once Owned by Gamal Abdel Nasser Dismantled for Scrap; Suspect Arrested
An unexpected crime has shaken Egypt's classic car community. The Ministry of Interior arrested a man accused of dismantling and stealing a historic vehicle — a Cadillac once owned by former President Gamal Abdel Nasser. This wasn't just another car. Its historical significance made it priceless.
The Scene of the Crime
Police received a tip about a man breaking down an old vehicle in the Al-Attarin district of Alexandria. Officers arrived to find the suspect using a hand saw, metal shears. Screwdrivers to cut the car into pieces. His plan was clear: sell the metal as scrap. But the story runs deeper. The suspect is the son of the car's legal owner.
The father had stored two classic cars in a private warehouse in Alexandria. One of them was the former presidential Cadillac. He told investigators he purchased both vehicles at a public auction back in 1981. The car's original license plates were surrendered to traffic authorities in 1995 after the owner let the registration lapse.
The Vehicles Involved
The primary vehicle is a 1961 Cadillac — the very model used by Nasser as his official state car. The second car in the warehouse was a Caprice, another classic in its own right. Two cars, two very different stories. One tied to the country's political history, the other a symbol of American automotive culture from that era. Both now damaged by the suspect's actions.
Legal Steps and Next Moves
The suspect was caught red-handed. He has been transferred to the public prosecutor's office, where investigations continue. The charges include theft and intentional destruction of property with historical value. The case has sparked outrage among classic car enthusiasts across the country. Losing any part of this vehicle means losing a piece of Egypt's national heritage.
